About

Hello, and welcome!

I am a PhD candidate in history at the University of Portsmouth.

I am researching the story of the nineteenth century British Royal Marines, principally between 1815 and 1914.  I am also examining how their long presence in the port town communities of Chatham, Portsmouth, and Plymouth, impacted both these communities and the organizational development of the Royal Marines during this period.  Not just another history of battles and key figures, it specifically looks at the importance of community and identity to our understanding of the social history of the Royal Marines, and cultural interchange in the places the Royal Marines lived and worked in Britain.

This site will hopefully provide interesting updates on the progress of my research, along with other items I find interesting, and perhaps even some pleas for help!
